Are you fed up with paying expensive taxi fares? Wishing for more freedom on your vacation? Sick of waiting in traffic? Hoping for an authentic Thai vacation experience? 

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you might be considering renting a moped in Phuket. 

You’ll notice motorbike rental shops everywhere when you arrive in Phuket. Many tourists use bikes to whizz around the island, and they’re usually very cheap to rent (around 150 baht per day). Mopeds are the transport method of choice for locals; they’re convenient, provide the ultimate freedom, and are the perfect fix for thrill seekers!

However, the main problem with mopeds is safety and financial consequences. 

Before you hop on a bike, make sure you know the pros and cons. Read on if you need help deciding whether to rent a moped in Phuket. 

Are You an Experienced Rider? 

If you’ve never driven a bike before, we don’t recommend trying it for the first time in Thailand. However, you shouldn’t be complacent even if you’re an experienced rider. 

• Can you understand Thai road signs?
• Are you familiar with the way people drive in Thailand? 
• Did you know that Thai scooters often differ vastly from those ridden in the West? 

Driving in Thailand requires extreme confidence and skill. Even then, it’s a risky decision to make. Remember, you cannot verify whether the bike is in a roadworthy condition, and it’s often difficult to ascertain whether the rental company is legitimate. 

Do You Have a Financial Safety Net? 

Although mopeds are one of the cheapest ways to get around Phuket, there can be hefty financial penalties if things go wrong. 

Be aware that many rental companies will want to keep your passport (always a bad idea) and may charge you an excessive amount if you damage the bike. 

Then, there’s your safety. Moped accidents are very common, and you should be especially cautious during the rainy season.  

Bear in mind that most travel insurance will not cover you to drive a moped abroad. If you get in an accident, there’s no way to ensure you will get adequate treatment. Make sure you have enough cash to pay for admission to a private or international hospital, should you need it. 

Finally, there are potential financial penalties for incorrect use. Phuket police often set up road stops and check tourists. They’re looking for drunk or drug driving, incorrect licenses, lack of helmets, faulty bikes, expired visas, and more. In most cases, you’ll receive an on-the-spot fine or be given a ticket – you’ll have to visit the local police station to pay this. 

Do You Have the Correct Documents? 

Finally, make sure you’re legally allowed to be driving the scooter. Enquire with the lender about whether they provide insurance, and make sure you take note of their phone number in case you’re pulled over. 

In terms of a license, you need to have an international driver’s license (obtained in your home country). However, you’re expected to get a Thai driving license after a few months in Thailand. 

Mopeds In Phuket: There’s No Freedom Without Risk 

If you answered yes to all these questions, then go ahead and rent a moped! You’ll save money, have total freedom, and get a great hit of adrenalin when you ride up and down the Phuket mountains. Buckle up, and enjoy the ride!
