Phuket’s Top Surfing Beaches

There are world-class surf spots to be enjoyed up and down the coast of Phuket. Here are a few spots you do not want to miss out on:

Kata Beach: Surfer’s Paradise

Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a beginner looking to catch your first wave, Kata Beach has something special for everyone. The steep, sweeping shoreline produces a wide array of wave types, ranging from gentle rollers to powerful barrels that challenge even the most experienced riders.

If you’re looking for crystal-clear waters and a safe, sandy bottom, head to Kata around June for a balanced mix of windswells and groundswells. You’ll find that the best swells originate from the southwest. At the beach break, surfers can catch both left and right-hand waves.

Kalim Beach: A Hidden Gem

For those in search of a quieter and less crowded surfing experience, Kalim Beach is a hidden gem. Located just north of Patong Beach, this reef break offers some challenging waves and is more suitable for experienced surfers.

Kalim sees large yet inconsistent swells, featuring a right hand reef break with the occasional left. While there are one or two rock formations to watch out for, this beach is an excellent destination for those looking to push their limits and bring their surf game to the next level.

Nai Harn Beach: Catch Big Barrels

Nai Harn Beach, located on the southern tip of the island, is one of Phuket’s most popular surf spots. The groundswell consistently delivers impressively large barrels at the northern reef break, making the beach a sought-after destination for those seeking a thrilling ride.

From April to October, when the monsoon season sweeps in,Nai Harn sees bigger waves and stronger winds than many of the west coast’s beaches, presenting a great opportunity for thrill-seekers to test their metal.

Nai Yang Beach: Ideal for Longboarders

Longboarders, rejoice! Nai Yang boasts gentle rollers, making it perfect for an easier surf experience. Plus, this beach is less crowded than some of the others, allowing you to enjoy a peaceful and uninterrupted surfing session.

Located in a National Park, the beach itself is clean, with a sandy shore. At the large reef break, the best offshore winds come in from the southeast, with the west southwest providing the ideal swell angle. You can also sometimes catch a good right hand swell at the end of the break.

Surin Beach: Great For Beginners

Surin Beach allows surfers to indulge in the best of both worlds.Famed as a family tourism hotspot, the swells here also provide decent, if slightly shallow, rollers that cater to various skill levels.

While the beach break is fairly inconsistent, it’s certainly worth a look during Monsoon season, when it can produce swells that are great for younger surfers and beginners. The soft sandy bottom adds an extra layer of security for those who lack confidence.

Patong Beach: The Vibrant Surfing Experience

During the day, Patong Beach offers an exhilarating surfing experience. The waves here are challenging, but thrilling. An east southeast wind is ideal, producing windswells and groundswells in equal measure.

And as the sun sets, Patong Beach transforms into a lively hub of nightlife. After a day of exhilarating surf, you can immerse yourself in the electric atmosphere of bars, restaurants, and entertainment venues. It’s a chance to unwind, socialize, and celebrate your day of riding the waves. Check out our ultimate guide to Patong’s nightlife right here.
